XP is a wonderful operating system and one of its default settings is to reboot if an error is encountered.

Control panel, Classic view, System, properties
Click on Advanced tab.
There will be a settings button for start up and recovery.
Uncheck the box that says reboot when error!!

Now go to Control Panel, Administrative tools, Event viewer.

Look for any errors that indicate a failure. Could be software or hardware error.

This needs administrator rights.

Good luck.

Your question is not specific enough. Service Pack 2 is quite reliable, and doesn't usually cause crashes. You need to describe exactly what you're doing and exactly what's happening. You might also check the computer manufacturer's website, or search for your computer's model number along with "service pack 2" to see if it's a common problem. If it's not a common problem, back up your files, re-format your hard drive, and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 directly from a CD.

Have you an antivirus software loaded on your laptop as this could be the cause , especially if it is MacFee. Try uninstalling it reload your XP and try again. If this makes any difference think about using a different antivirus software.

I had exactly the same thing happen to me when I downloaded service pack 2 and it took me days to fathom out what the problem was. Macfee can be the devils own at times.

You HAVE to do all the service pack 1 updates before service pack 2 for some reason. I had to do that many many times, until I just went out and bought service windows with pack 2 in the first place.

Some services and programs which run at startup may need to be reinstalled. These inlcude Virus Scan Programs and Anti spyware.

Unintall and Reinstall, and then runa full scan of all software of this nature.

ensure all antivirus software and firewalls are turned off before attempting to download sp2

I would probably reformat and add my antivirus protrection program.... then upgrade to sp2 before adding any programs... in other words start over...

are you sure there isn't a virus on your computer? i doubt it's windows xp itself because that wouldn't make sense. otherwise, take it to a computer repair shop and have them install it for you.

From what I have read you shouldn't have a problem. Maybe you have a corrupted SP2?
