Certain "FREE" sites on the internet or sites ordered from requires a credit card number most of the time as some sort of assurance, i guess. Why is it that long after the use or purchase of an item, hidden charges are still being taken off the card? What can I do to stop this other than cancelling the card? When I try to use my card for other purposes, its causing it to decline. what do I do?

1) Call your credit card company immediately and notify them that all these charges were unauthorized. Go back as far as you need to.
2) Contact the companies on the phone and investigate their predatory charges. More than likely, they will drop them as they know they were unauthorized. If they call them "memberships", decline immediately and stop all future charges for all of them.
3) If it says FREE, do NOT give out any credit card info. Do NOT give them anything to charge you with - because obviously they will use your credit card number.
4) Make arrangments with your credit card company to monitor these companies. Perhaps set limits on the spending amounts, where the card can be used, no out of state charges, etc..

These "FREE" offers are simply ruses to get the credit card/bank information info from you. Millions of people do this everyday so you can see how profitable it is for these companies.
Do not accept that the work "Free" now means you have to pay for something. Don't let predatory business practices take your money...

I hear ya! Sometimes these sites are free for say 3 months and then they start billing your card unless you cancel before the 3 months are up. I had this problem with AOL. Just call the site up and say you want to cancel whatever it is. If charges still appear after that then I'd call your credit card company and ask for an explanation...Good luck!

First I would contact that company and see what these charges are exactly. Then I would dispute them with my credit card company. Most of the time that should take care of the problem right then, especially if you are up to date in paying your credit card bill. =)

call the credit card issuer, and report the fraud,
in the future use a prepaid credit card ( the ones with like $20 on them)
and if they take the money, its not a big deal

You need to get your card hot carded or hot listed. This way recurring charge will not be transferred to the new card.
