The control does not start working until 2 months of consistent use. Meaning no skipped days. The mood swings kick in about in two weeks. This is with any pill. To be used effectively the pill needs to be taken the same time every day. Remember you play with fire you get fire... use good judgment.

The pill won't work accurately during the first month. It takes some time for your body to get used to all of the hormonal changes. To be safe, I would wait for two full cycles before you even think about not using a back-up method. Make sure you are using a condom for at least the first 2 months. And make sure you are taking your pill at the SAME TIME every day. Try not to miss any pills. If you miss one, take it as soon as you remember. Then take the next one at your regular time. If you miss it twice, you'll have to start all over again.
