isnt data written to only one side of a floppy disk, or both?

that is kind of a trick question. the floppy itself has only one side because there is only one way that a floppy will go into the drive without getting stuck. but if you have ever looked inside a floppy disk, you will see that there is tape in there much like a casette tape. so, it is actually writing to that tape inside which could be on either side.

It depends on the floppy drive.
For PCs, the first generation of 5 1/4" floppy drives were single sided. The next generation featured two read/write heads (double-sided).
This saved people from having to remove and flip the floppy disk in order to access the other side.
For 3 1/2" drives, they were double sided (even the OLD non-PC drives).
