It means that basically this person will not tell a lot about themselves to others; they are introverted or shy, perhaps a little afraid to open up for fear of being too vulnerable.

If a person is described as "being guarded", it usually means that they are locked in a room, with one or two big muscle-bound blokes outside the door. However, if it's their manner which is guarded, this generally means that they do not say much, answering questions with as little embellishment as possible. Normally the person in question is trying to establish trust with others, before becoming more open in their actions and conversations.

aloof, not spontaneous (you're not entirely sure of the person's innermost thoughts / opinions / feelings) when someone's demeanour is "guarded" it means its almost like someone or something "guarding" their true feelings or opinions, they think long and hard before they give an opinion (some people weigh things up more (the pro's and con's) whereas others just blurt out an opinion, more often than not, a not-well-thought-out one.
In the negative sense "guarded" could mean, someone who is not completely straight / honest or upfront.
It generally adds an air of mystery, but it can be used in a neg or positive way.

I look at it in a Spiritual way, I am "Guarded" by the love of Jesus Christ against all the powers of darkness and evil in this world. You see, we all need protection from one thing or another, but when you become a true born-again-Christian you have nothing to fear because you're covered in the Blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit against the supernatural forces that do exist in the world.

I also have nothing to fear in death, because I will immediately go to Heaven to spend eternity with the Lord our God. Therefore, I interpret myself as well guarded, no matter what happens to me, in any aspect of my life. You can too, God is just a prayer away.
God Bless You.

It, that is the term, applies to a person whose MIND is monitoring almost every thought the person's brain is processing for fear that the person might disclose something of what his/her MIND holds hidden within itself.

The majority of this activity is taking place between ones MIND and ones brain, via what I refer to as D-Think, or Delusional Thinking, or thoughts being fed to ones brain by ones MIND that are intended to focus the person on people, places, and things outside of oneself. But, with each thought being monitored, the pausing or hesitation can become so pronounced that it is noticeable.

With so much "restriction" of emotional energy taking place, some is broadcast to the muscles of the person as well. So there can be a stiffening of ones body, and usually such people avoid being touched, because the touching takes their attention off the monitoring, and this causes a brief panic.

What is being masked within the person's MIND is some fear, and it is this fear that needs to be addressed by someone competent to deal with the MIND. Such a person would be found within about 1% of the entire mental health field. So, good luck in searching.

Peace
