The pitch to Eckstein last night was totally legal. That ball wasn't that far inside, and if Eckstein is all over the plate on the squeeze, he deserves to be brushed back. If the pitcher throws at the batter's head, it's a different story. But pitchers are allowed to throw inside, even on a bunt attempt. What's he supposed to do, just serve it up there? You'll notice the Cardinals weren't getting that upset about it. They knew it was a legal part of the game.

Since the game began. You have always been able to throw at a batter w/o receiving punishment. And you should be able too. I know what ur referring to I think, when Eckstein was trying to squeeze. As a pitcher you are taught to throw at their abdomen section if squeeze situations b/c the batter is taught to get the bunt down NO MATTER WHERE IT IS. So they have to try and go after it and risk getting hit, as Eckstein did. That was just a smart pitch, not a dirty pitch. Batters get hit on a regular basis on purpose, most of the time you dont realize its on purpose but most of the time it is on purpose, these guys are professionals they can put the ball pretty much where they want it w/ in a couple of inches, if someone misses at the chest or head, its most likely on purpose. They are 60 ft. 6 inches away they have plenty of time to get out of the way...

Also throwing at batters is an important part of pitching, if its illegal to do so then hitting would get alot easier. Simply b/c you have to establish that you will throw on all sides of the plate and that you will throw inside. So if a batter gets up there and scoots WAY inside to try and take that outside corner away then you are basically screwed if you cant throw at him and back him off the plate b/c then none of your breaking pitches or anything on the outside half of the plate will work very well. Throwing at them and knocking them off the plate a lil makes the world of difference to a pitcher. Baseball is a game of inches, and if he is 2 inches off the plate from where he was thats the difference between a weak grounder and a homerun.

In saying that you should NEVER try to hurt the guy...I have regrettably thrown at guys heads out of anger but it is completely wrong b/c that sh*t HURTS. I got hit in the face by a pitcher, wasnt the greatest thing ever. But throwing at batters from the chest down or so should and prob. wont ever be "illegal".

If a guy is an idiot enough to show the squeeze to early, you throw inside so it does not work. That is the way the game is played. You want Eckstein to bail , not get pegged and trap the runner at third. Eckstein actually did a good job. The Mets are not head hunters. If we had Pedro , then I could see people getting beamed. The games are so big that no one wants to hit a guy on purpose, in fact Delgado tried to lean into one.

If it is a wild pitch and not intentional, so be it but I think you mean
to ask how can he hit the batter and get away with it. That ball
last night clearly hit the batter on the fingers but Umpire said no.

IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF THE GAME. GET USED TO IT.

KB, BEFORE JUST POSTING AN ANSWER FOR 2 POINTS, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. IF AN UMPIRE THINKS A PITCHER THROWS AT A BATTER INTENTIONALLY, HE CAN'T AWARD THE BATTER FIRST BASE. HE CAN WARN THE PITCHER OR EJECT THE PITCHER. IF IT IS A RECURRING INCIDENT IN A GAME, HE ALSO CAN EJECT THE COACH.

It is part of the game. Just don't do it on purpose or more then once in the same game to the same player.
