The expansion tank answers are the ones you should seriously consider. It sounds as if you may already have a pressure regulator at the water main entry to the house. Normally, when the tank heats the water, it actually expands back into the water main from the street. If pressure is high, or if regulator is in place, that prevents expansion into the mains, so the valve is leaking for good reason -- the pressure is too high. Need expansion tank.

You need to check your water pressure coming into the house. Call a plumber and have then check the pressure, you may need to have a pressure regulator placed on the main line. Too high of water pressure will give the water heater a force feeding of humble pie and make it leak through the relief valve.

Your water pressure in your home may be high enough that when the heating the water through expansin the pressure is above the 150# setting.A thermal extrol tank can be installed so when the water heats it has somewhere to go.

You didnt say where its leaking from.
Did you put teflon tape or paste on the threads of the pressure releif valve?
Is the valve plunger seated properly ?

I doubt lifting the lever caused any problems most likely it was either faulty or your thermostat is allowing the temp to get too high.
