Do you determine a processor's performance by looking how high it's GHz is? Or do you need to test and compare it yourself? Please help me...Thanks!

This used to be fairly useful, but it is almost totally useless now. The first change was AMD chips that could outperform Intel chips running at a higher GHz. But you could still compare AMD to AMD and Intel to Intel. But now it is all about architecture, a 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo will probably outperform a 3.0Ghz Pentium D. You have to look at benchmarks, or as you said test and compare yourself. Here are some good benchmarks that will help:http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

Processor speed numbers are only one of about 20 considerations for performance. If two processors are exactly the same design and one has a higher speed number, then the higher number is faster. But different types of data handling scenarios will respond better with some specific types of processors than with others that may be the same speed or even a bit slower. You may remember in the mid to late 1990's, the Motorola RISC processors in the Apple computers (G3) were about 20-30 percent faster than the Intel processors sold at about the same period in history for most real life data tasks such as video rendering and Photoshop filter processing. That doesn't hold today as the IBM-Motorola group has fallen behind but it serves as an example of how speed alone is not your only consideration.

If you want to determine a processor's performance - by looking at the speed you will know how speedy the processor is but one must know that different processors have different reputations -

like AMD processors are very good for gaming and other graphic things
Intel is very good for home operations

but processor alone does not make the performanc eof a computer,

for the over all performance of the computer - processor and mother board both are crutial - so my recomendation is buy the best mother board available and higher the bus speed - higher the performance of the computer.

so to summarize over all performance of a computer will be determined by

Processor + mother board (Buss speed) + Ram (Higher the Ram - higher the performance)

The processor tells which pixels bypass the place on your visual demonstrate unit, the fee of which this occurs is measured in Frames or Frames consistent with 2d (FPS) the appropriate thank you to be certain how nicely a game runs is thru what number frames consistent with 2d, you are able to acquire some utility referred to as "Fraps" and it has an FPS counter interior the final top so which you will visual demonstrate unit your perfomance. Low FPS <10 = undesirable severe FPS (30-40) = stable in case you opt to improve your FPS without including greater suitable hardware you need to consistently turn a number of the pix settings down, Anti-Aliasing could be became off so as which you will get greater suitable FPS.

yes you can the higher CPU in ghz the faster the PC will be.yes you can test them your self if you want to buy more than one of them just to find out that you don't want the other ones because there performance is bad.

yes the speed is good , but what do u want the computer 2 do ,lots of ram (1 gig or better), fsb 400 mghz , and a good mid-range graphix card , :)

theres lots of things that add processor performance. its clatch is the first thing you should look at. then you want to look at if its X2 core or single. you want X2 core lots of clatch, and a AMD chip (so you can overclock it). if you going to overclock your chip, you should buy a water cooled system.

maybe...cause its the speed of frequency your computer....
i think the memory would also be a factor in your computer performance the higher the memory the faster it executes program...
