Forget about British Gas as they always quote the highest prices and then they sub contract the work to a local heating engineer.
Call in a heating engineer for a quote, not an estimate, a quote. State your preference and you will get what you want.
Go to a local Travis Perkins and talk to their heating specialist and he will help with your choice and find out the retail price of the boiler you want. See if he will give you a discount if you buy it then get the Heating Engineer to quote for labour only.
As you are getting a new boiler go for a Condensing boiler as these are more efficient and will cost you less to run.
Have the whole system cleaned and flushed out at the same time and put Fernox into the system. This will keep it cleaner.

The price quoted by british gas is way over the top. I would reccomend a Combi boiler and they are priced at between £500/£600. I would reccomend that you get a few estimates from Corgi fitters before you think of british Gas doing it.

An electric central boiler is not a very good option these days. First, there are considerable transfer losses (making hot water, then sending the hot water to the radiators - which you would have to install and pipe) as well as a massive expense that you will _not_ recover in increased efficiency or reduced electric bills. And, even with thermostatic valves on each new radiator, you will have to heat a very large mass of water and iron before the first BTU/watt is delivered to your house. Electric radiators may be individually controlled and have no transfer losses. Look for an electric tankless water heater to make domestic hot water. Stick with the electric radiators until either gas is available, or the price of fuel-oil/propane drops to a reasonable level.

you are being ripped off as I am a gas fitter, and did you know that a regular hot water boiler fitted to the pipes and vented properly will do the same job as a so called heater boiler does and at leas than 20% of the cost too...check a book called gas fitting made easy by John Dutton and also by him a book called gasfitters code understood. it is available in Canada , but I do not know about in the UK..I am from UK and I know the prices there are outlandish, but 4000 is extortion...I fitted my whole house a 5 beddroom with over 4000 square feet of space with central air conditioning and the ductwork and new furnace as well as hot water tank too for under 4000 canadian dollars. you are getting the shaft at 8000 dollars for Boiler.. who is installing it for you, the Queen ?

Been there and done that.
British Gas will be a pricey option, but they will say that you have more of a guarantee and if you sign up to their 4 star service you may get a discount.
They will offer finance options as well.
You could probably get it done for less but would you be able to follow up if there was a problem afterwards ?
I went with BG in the end and allthough I have had some problems their customer service does at least seem to want to solve them for me !
This is also about your safety and peace of mind.
Do you know anyone who has had a similar job done recently ?
Good luck !

yep go for a combi boiler and your best bet for getting one would be a local trades man that has a good reputation. he'll probably do it for £3000.
