Both would be experienced sea farers but the Pirates coming a thousand years later would probably have a techonolical advantage with their ship not to mention the size which would dwarf a long boat. However take the boats out of the equation and I would give it to the vikings. They have sheilds and helmets, not common apparel for Pirates; They have throwing axes and you've taken away the pirates guns; they also have berserkers who would cause fear and I would imagine be able to take on several men. Vikings historically were involved in large pitched battles where as pirates tended to prey on merchant vessels and avoid battle ships so the former would be more battle hardened due to the quality of the opponents they faced. And the Viking's homeland is a lot tougher to live in creating a tougher lot than the sun-tanned pirates. But you also have to take the captain into account and how well he leads his men. There are quite few famous Pirate captains but fewer well know Viking leaders. Still this maybe down to the Vikings coming form the dark ages when a lot of historical data was not recored or destroyed. So I guess I personally would bet on the Vikings at 3/5 odds

In a sea battle, probably the pirates. If they got on land, though, vikings. Well, unless the pirates had guns. That might put them at an advantage.

Vikings were larger, stronger and spent more time actually sailing. They had some blunt weapons and swords but I bet that pirates had better long range weapons.
Pirates would probable have the advantage when fighting ship-to-ship. Because they spent more time running than landing or exploring, pirates would not make the best land fighters, unless they could find a good tree to hide behind!
Go figure!

The vikings would win hands down , a viking longboat crew would outnumber a pirates, plus vikings were extremely bloodthirsty
and although they looked disorganised they were not they worked in complete harmony, cutlasses verses long handled axes no contest !. the only thing pirates had going for them was navigation

The Vikings would. Pirates were bands of roaming outlaws on the sea. Vikings were a race of people in different countries in Scandanavia, Ireland and Britain. Therefore, there would be a lot more Vikings than Pirates and they would win.

Vikings would probably win, and no they are not the same as Pirates as they were more like conquerers often acting under the orders of "legitimate" (by their standards) rulers Kings. However Pirates had only the sole motivation of profit it or material gain. Vikings however wanted conquest power and material gain so I think they'd be much more motivated for a fight. Also Vikings were warriors their lives and deaths very often judged on achievments in battle so for them it was almost religious in their quest for Valhalla (sorry about the sp.) as well as materialistic.

Vikings without a doubt if you stick to those conditions. Pirates would probably have scurvy while the Vikings would be berserk. Vikings on land and sea.

I'd say Vikings. Pirates would have lost some of their hand to hand combat skills due to the advent of the firearm/cannon.
