for a domestic flight....aka within the 50 states or US territories, a govt issued photo id is required, such as a driver's liscence. Passport of course would work too, being that its govt issued ....
For international flights, it depends on your nationality and where you're flying to. For example, if you're flying from the US to Mexico, Canada, or most pasrts of the Carribean, and are a US citzen, you'll need a govt issued photo ID plus proof of citizenship....which would include a notarized copy of your birth certificate....or again the passport itself. which is both a phot id and proof of citizenship. That will be changing in Jan of this year....you'll need a passport to get back into the US by air or sea.
For most other foregin destinations, you'll need a passport and maybe a visa. It depends on the country. Again for US citizens, Europe req only passport, most African nations req visa. Most Asian destinations don;t req visa,,,aka Phillipines, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand etc. China req visa. Your airline can check requirements, or go to www.travel.state.gov. Different nationalities have different requirements....
