I have had my kids make a Spanish newspaper before. You can put them in groups so that each can be responsible for different sections. They can have an editor, etc. I suggest having 2 editors so that the editor does not think that all they have to do is check the other people's work. They should also be responsible for writing.

Have the kids brainstorm to determine what goes into a magazine. Create a table of contents and let the kids know what you expect.

Give them a rubric so that they know exactly what they will be graded on.

Decide whether your kids behavior level allows for them to work in groups.... The lesson should take a few classes, Day 1: Choose magazine subject (ex. beauty, auto, etc.) Day 2: Choose stories, sections Day 3: layout-- let them do their own writing and depending on how much you have to spend/time... you can let them use disposable cameras or magazine photos.
They should present to the class, or better yet, let the classmates go from magazine to magazine and write short critiques.
Of course you realize this has to follow a lesson on what a magazine is.
