Strange question, I know. But if someone commits murder and listens to classical or jazz music, why don't the media blame the music? They always blame rock and rap music, and horror films yet I'm sure the Krays didn't listen to NIN and watch Nightmare on Elm street.

When I first read your question I thought, come on... classical and jazz... murder! But then I really got thinking about it and you do have quite a good question.

When I think of classical tunes like Eight Songs for a Mad King by Davies, Pierre Lunaire by Schoenberg, some of the Bartok quartets, some of the Shostakovich quartets, Ancient Voices of Children by Crumb, some Revueltas works, etc... I'm convinced that there is plenty of dark enough classical music to at least drive one into insanity if they obsessed over it. And jazz too, some of Coltraine's solo are pretty out there, and Sun Ra, come on!

I suppose if the investigators found 23 different recordings of the same classical or jazz work(s) in a guys car, house, ipod, computer, etc... then the press would probably make a deal of it. When entire demographics of people listen to similar music (death metal, rap, whatever...) then it is easy to point to it when one of the listeners does something bad. Especially when they committed suicide while listening to said music! I certainly believe in the influence of music on our emotional state, but when it comes down to it people are responsible for their own actions regardless of what music they put in themsleves. Not to say that all music and video is okay... I think it can accentuate an already bad emotional state. It can also help us grieve, make us happy, etc... but it can also put us past the edge. You could also argue that there would have been another trigger to put them over the edge if the music wasn't there... could be true.

It may also come down to the fact that death metal plays on only a few emotions, where classical music as a whole plays on about every emotion. If a new class of gangs emerged in Philly that immersed themselves in Schoenberg and killed people while listening to it I bet the press would pick up on that and Schoenberg would come with parental advisories. :)

Some folks allege that some of Wagner's work influenced the Nazis and their may be some truth to that although I don't know for sure. Wagner had some weird stuff alright enough.

Don't get me wrong I love Wagner's music.

The huge difference is that classical music has a very limited audience and an even more limited theme involving the seamy side of life. Almost all rap, many rock songs and for sure many many TV programs and movies have just deluged the world with violence, murder and mayhem. It is almost impossible to understand why you seem to think that such over saturation of these themes does not have an influence and that it can not drive someone over the edge.

If music is to be considered in this way I would suggest only classical instruments have the ability to cover the whole frequency range. Certainly a synthesiser could do a better job but it is the combination of harmonics and not the frequency alone that would be responsible.
The brain operates around 1.75Ghz and it might be possible for some harmonics to reach that level under certain conditions?
Not that we could hear them, but that doesn't stop its possible effect.

I have never been able to see this connection between musical lyrics and violent crime. I have listened to some real nasty songs, and classical and I have never wanted to murder anyone.

No, I don't think so! Classical music doesn't use gutter language or talk about killing someone you love.Gangsta Rap is just filth attempting to wear a presentable face and not succeeding.
