This is an easy answer and even easier to understand.
Before Rock & Roll ( a term that Allen Freed called the music on his radio show in the very early 50's) was starting to take shape a few artist and producers started working with a different knid of music.
Although this music was around for centuries, artist started mixing the sounds and tempo's of the deep South Blues and the Gospel of the same regions. The artist would take a song and add different instuments and speed up the tempo until the sound became his own or something new in the world of music.
You can still listen to old time blues and gospel from the 40's and before and hear the sounds that changed music forever.
thanks
Randy Scott

Rock started down south with the blues. Artist like Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson among others. The sounds of these black artists started to influence Country artists. Elvis initially was playing country and then he started to use these innovative sounds by black artists that were largely shunned by the media and added it to his country style. This is what essentially started rock and roll. Rock was very basic for a while but in the mid-60's musicians like the Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Moody Blues, and Pink Floyd started to experiment with other sounds and the rock gener was forever splintered into different sub-genre groups. Psychadelllic, progressive, hard rock, and later on metal, punk, and alternative.
