Britain used to be such a lovely country to live in once upon a time.

It's not anymore that's why I have left to live in Thailand, where it's a lot better in many ways. Not ALL ways. But MANY.......

I moved to the UK from Canada - and had NO IDEA how 'nasty' people in Britain were until I got here. I agree with you about the nasty bit - but didn't know it had ever been different.

I can handle the humour, the witt, the intelligent banter.... but Brits are completely off the deep end when it comes to mentality and attitude.

Not sure if it's a new trait or a trait that has always been a part of the British psyche. Perhaps it has alot to do with the culture. A very high percentage of people in Britain are addicted to alcohol, which makes you moody, depressed and needy. Alcohol also adds to feelings of aggression and intimidation. People in the UK are miserable, even the nice ones.

Maybe you've just noticed it now that you don't live here anymore.

Your right - it could be such a great place to live but the people make it almost unbearable.

I am not sure that people are nastier now than they used to be, it's that people seem to speak their minds more openly and in many cases have captive audience. Such as Q&A. I also think as we get older we are prone to be more vocal.

It is a shame that you felt the need to leave this great country of ours..though I am sure many will disagree with me over the word great. It still has lovely people and I honestly think that we are the most tolerant people in the whole world..second to none in fact.

It is a great shame that we have had governments that do not appreciate what good folk we really are.

Hurry back your country needs you NOW!

Absolutely - especially in London. Take last night on the train home - three teenage girls (13? 14?) on a crowded train playing rap music through the loudspeaker of a mobile phone (obscene lyrics) and shouting out to them. Two people asked them to stop (me included) and you should have heard the torrent of abuse. No morals, no standards, no sense of what is right or wrong. Self absorbed, discurteous, illiterate, unable to vocalise - need I go on? Obviously not everyone is like this, but I am afraid that the Katherine Tate "am i bovvered?" and the Little britain army of teenage mothers are alive and well in South London.

Depends what you see as nastier but overall I think I'd have to say Yes they have. The problem with Britain now is that it is way over populated in towns and cities, people want a higher standard of living so have to work longer hours to maintain it leaving them stressed and angry and also I think a big contributory factor is that its now 50 + years since the war. During the war years people pulled together, you looked out for your friends and neighbours - times were hard and everyone muddled through together.. As new generations are growing up they havent experienced any of this and are therefore of the opinion 'Everyone out for themselves' - friendly interest is now seen as extreme nosyness and so people dont mix anymore. Put all this with the fact we have so many cultures here now all trying to keep there indidvidual identities and what we have is a divided Britain which comes across as aggressive and nasty.

I recon its because we have become more competitive in our way of life. Its gone from being a healthy competitive to a very unhealthy competitive. Its more of got to be better than the next person no matter what, got to have more, got to look better etc etc. In the past I think we were perhaps stil striving a bit and actually helped others who were not doing so well. Now we just pass them by or knock them out of the way. Just my opinion.

Don't live in Britain, but it must be 20 years since I've heard of anyone getting hit in the head with a dart at the soccer.

You cant give scoundrels a good thrashing anymore im sorry to say, police can't clip kids around the ear.

Problem is life is too easy these days for people, loss of family, loss of respect for elders. Family members seen as financial and social liabilities, all ages. Compare to Africa, Europe, and far east where still family orientated.

The 80's weren't the best of times - the creation of yuppies etc, wealth but no class, same as chavs and bling.

I don't think we're nastier but there's a hell of a lot more of us (we all know why) and we have much more to tolerate that other countries just will not accept. We as British decent have less human rights than ever before... How many of our relatives would have fought for their country had they known that this would be the outcome? - I doubt any at all.

Hi, not that I particularly like it here in the UK, but its a worldwide problem with a lack of respect, meaning everyones out for themselves and not willing to help others. A very true observation! :O) xx
