A router will connect two computers to one ethernet cable. That one ethernet cable should be either coming from a DSL box or a cable modem. If you have a service provider that doesn't really worry much about their customers using routers, the DSL or cable modem will reset after it is powered off for at least 40 seconds. When it is powered on again, it will connect to the router. Now you should configure each of your computers for connection to a DHCP server. Consult your help guide on your computer for assistance with that part.

Now you will need to configure your router to make the proper connection to your DSL box or cable modem. If you have DSL, you may or may not have service by PPPoE. Ask your Internet Service Provider (the company you pay for Internet service) whether your service is PPPoE or DHCP. Your instructions that came with the router will show you exactly how to configure the router for either of these types of service. The instructions of the router will give an IP address for the router and when you use a browser such as Firefox or (cringe) Internet Explorer to load that IP address, you will see the default page of the router and that's where you begin the configuration.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Even if you have a router, you STILL need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as Comcast, AOL or what have you. Are you trying to go wireless with one of your computers?
As far as you IP address, go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Command Prompt. When the black box pops up, type in ipconfig and it will give you your IP address and Subnet mask.
