Depends upon where you are coming from. I suppose some would argue about the evils of consumerism without defining them, a careless squandering of resources, etc.
I am retired and depend upon capital return for my survival. Plenty of other people look for a strong economy to provide jobs and a livelihood for themselves and their families. Consumer spending is THE driving force to sustain a strong and growing economy. Choke off the economy and you choke off the lives of millions of Americans.
So, the answer is that we do not have to avoid consumerism, but work within that paradigm to achieve maximum and equitable efficiencies.

If people become so materialistic (most of us already are), it will come to a point where we will do just whatever it takes to make money and become capitalists (e.g. prostitution, assasinate, murder the innocent). We will neglect our moral and religious values and then what will be left?

It's important to remember that money is essential, but it isn't everything in life.
