I cannot STAND most dairy products. I only like cheese , Ice cream and butter! Is there any other ways to get Calcium besides milk or milk-like things? Also, I was told that I coudln't take a calcium supp. AND an iron Supp. at the same time, so which is more important: Iron or Calcium??? Is it possible that I already get enough Iron without the supp. ?

Hi
I truly would not worry. I eat almost no dairies, and no meat what so ever. I am also pregnant and my doc, though he keeps a closer guard on me than on other pregnant women, says both me and the baby are doing great.

Iron and Calcium are NOT always best absorved from milk and dairies. Some studies have shown that. I take iron and calcium from vegetal sources:

calcium: rose hip, spinachs, kale, broccoli, soya beans and soy products (tofu)
iron: spinachs, soya beans, lentils, peas.
that way you do not have to worry about taking both of them at the same time.

By the way, rose hip oil and tea are a great source of calcium. I have massage with this oil, (though I do not know if that allows me to absorb the calcium) and is also great for the skin and preventing strech marks.

and, speaking from the energy poin of view, if you TRULY need something, your pregnant body will start craving for foods that have it. So if you find out that you crave for milk, then drink it.
take care!

You can get calcium nowadays from a lot of things. I think orange juice can have it. I used to drink it when I first was pregnant because it had calcium in it and i don't really like Milk either. But I had morning sickness and threw up my orange juice, so it doesn't sound too appealing anymore! (sorry) I've thrown up a few other juices too, so don't worry. Tums has calcium in it, and that is harmless. Talk to your doctor about taking cacium pills or something. Otherwise enjoy some cheese and ice cream... Seriously though, look at the orange juices they have one that is infused with calcium. :)

Hope this helps>>> :)

You can buy a good muti-vitamin that will have your iron and your calcium in it at the same time. Otherwise, if you don't like taking pills, Tropicana Orange Juice is now putting calcium in their juices. I think some other juice companies or doing it also. Just go to the grocery store and check out the orange juices. It says right on the juice container saying something like "Now with Calcium" I lot of breads have been fortified with calcium too. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck.

Soya milk, pizza dough is high in calcium. Calcium is more important than iron as you can probably get iron from many food sources that you like such as red meat. Since you hate dairy products you are limited to your sources and lack of calcium can cause osteoporosis so take a supplement.

The orange +calcium solution is a good one. Besides that you can eat pancakes made with milk or eat eggs (but not too much when you're pregnant, they are loaded with vit. A too).

Spinach, wallnuts and red meat contain nice amounts of iron, so that could be a solution for the iron problem. Iron pills are not very nice, they could make you feel sick. So if you can push up the iron otherwise I would prevent taking them.

Unfortunately, Iron and Calcium are both vital, but for different reason. You blood needs iron to be capable of transporting oxygene, your bones need calcium to stay / become strong.

Are you taking an iron supplement? Unless you've had your blood tested and are anemic, you shouldn't need it so long as you're taking a standard prenatal vitamin.

Otherwise, there are a lot of juices now that have additional calcium in them. Some green vegetables contain plenty of calcium that's absorbed even better than the calcium in milk products, as well as beans, figs, and molasses!

u can get calcium thru soy milk. tho it tastes weird, mix it with choc. syrup and it will be fine. you can also take a fiber supplement that has calcium added. not sure if fiber supplement would interfer with iron pill tho. what are u taking the iron pill for? if its for anemia or something like that then you are safer to continue taking it. you definitely dont want to mess up that. but calcium is important at a younger age to ensure bone strength when u get older and are more prone to osteoperosis. if you like yogurt eat a couple of cups a day (try to get low fat to stay away from fattening things), string cheese is nice and portable, and ice cream is always great (try frozen yogurt for lower fat if you are worried about fat in that too)

but above all, if you are worried about mixing pills and vitamins ask a dr or nurse, or possibly even a nutrition store clerk (GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc)

Considering your dietary preferences, I'd say eating foods with iron while taking calcium supplements would be the easier option. You can get iron from a variety of foods such as meats, dark leafy greens, anchovies, and oatmeal. If you decide to take a calcium supplement, avoid calcium carbonates as they are good for upset stomachs, they are not readily absorbable or bio-available. Stick with calcium citrates.

If you're pregnant you need to be discussing this with your Doctor.

You can get calcium in yogurt, broccoli and other veggies. Also take a multi vitamin with calcium in it plus an additional calcium supplement. But first talk with your doctor.

The baby's bones need to grow and the calcium in your own bones will provide it for the baby. If you don't have enough then you both will suffer.

Iron is very important too while the baby is growing. So talk with your doctor.'
