Oftentimes it is just a matter of listening to the patient -- what is confusing to one person struggling with an issue may be not confusing at all to another person/doctor -- and then doing 2 things:

1. Discovering misconceptions the patient may have about important things that have happened in their life. (Let's face it, sometimes people learn the wrong lessons -- as in the first caveman who picked up a burning log may have learned that fire is "bad" --- the lesson he should have learned was that fire deserves respect and can be a good thing).

2. Pointing out misconceptions to patient and helping them relearn a healthier way of thinging about specific things.

If the problem is a problem of chemistry in the brain -- they can point them to the right medications to bring things back into balance.

Are you speaking of the 95% that know absolutely nothing about your MIND or Spiritual realms? Or are ou talking about the 5% who are naturally open to their psychic faculties a bit?

The typical psychologist will talk with a person, listening very carefully [many will even make notes] to the person's story... which is the way in which the person's MIND makes sure that the person listening will be fed a host of delusional thinking that has nothing at all to do with what the person needs to discover.

They will then proceed to render a verdict based on the story, and if they think you are seriously screwed up, they will refer to you a psychiatrist who will get you started on drugs...

In ten years or so, when the Karma you were going through is done, you will feel better and give credit to those who have taken your money for talking with you.

If this doesn't seem like something you would care to participate in... then join others in insisting that mental health professionals be forced to undergo an extensive program of psychotherapy before being licensed to "practice" on people.

Peace

From my own personal experience, they help you analyze your problems - to see the root causes and basically, you learn and get insights into your own behavior, thoughts, feelings and that of other people who are important to you and affecting your life.

These insights can help you change your life - both of you together have to work on it and it helps if both of you have an open mind about it, but sometimes, the psychologist is invested in his theories more than in the person or maybe he is invested in the business end of it - in other words making money by continuing sessions when no longer necessary.

a psychologist firstly tries to get information about the person to find out what the problem actually is. this information is about the person, his/her family relations, social life and the problem that forced him/her to get psychological help. then, he/she applies some psychological tests to the client. by all the information, the psychologist tries to understand whether the problem is to be solved medically. because a psychologist does not give medical treatment, that is done by a psychiatrist.
the next step is to find out the most suitable treatment. there are many different therapy techniques (e.g. psychoanalysis, behavioral, cognitive, transactional, family therapy, group therapy etc.). each of these are effective in different disorders.
therapy process (time, frequency, methods...) is different in all the techniques. the process also depends on the reactions of client.
