Does anybody know how to build a miniature set from scratch?

Has anybody built a miniature set/landsape to film before? Do they have any advice on what materials to use?

I need to create a canyon - not lush, not desert - kinda inbetween.
I also need to find the materials to create buildings that look futuristic.

take a big block of styro foam...carve out the canyon....then cover with a real thin plaster...and paint...(the hobby shop has awesome miniature trees and bushes...
