One major difference is that 'back in the day' the show was about a family. An actual biological family. 'Leave it To Beaver', 'I Love Lucy', 'Bewitched', 'The Andy Griffith Show', 'The Jeffersons', 'Family Ties', 'All in the Family', 'The Cosby Show', 'The Flintstones'.
Now, most sitcoms are about a group of friends. Often these friends are so close that they act like family, but they are friends. 'Cheers', 'Seinfeld', 'Friends'

I really liked the old sitcoms, because they were funny with out being distasteful. My kids could watch them. We laugh even now at the Beverly Hillbillies.

Well, for starters, couples can be seen in the same bed together! Rob and Laura Petry never got to sleep in the same bed! Kinda makes you wonder how little Richie ever came to exist! Wanna know who the first TV couple to be seen in bed together was? Fred and Wilma Flintstone!
