You can not always use synthetic division. It only works in certain cases (like when dividing by x-c). You can sometimes modify other divisions and then use synthetic, but this does not always work.
You can always try the quess and check method, which is perhaps the worst method. The long division method is of course better.

It is a little process called synthetic division. Synthetic division is a shorthand, or shortcut, method of polynomial division in the special case of dividing by a linear factor (and only works in this case). It is generally used, however, not for dividing out factors but for finding zeroes (or roots) of polynomials.
