Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I find that this poem has an unexpectedly powerful effect on audiences. Dylan Thomas wrote it for his father and did not dare publish it during the old man's lifetime, as his father did not realise that he was dying. It is in the form of a villanelle: an intricate construction which requires the repetition of two alternating lines. It was originally a structure which was for light, simple, pastoral verse. Here it is used in a very different context, which increases the dramatic effect. Like all Dylan Thomas's poems, it is one which needs to be read out loud.

I fell in love with a book of poems written by this autistic child called Tito. He writes so simply yet his poems evoke so much emotion and meaning.

Dulce et decorum est. by Wilfred Owen. He was a trench poet. Really powerful, persuasive stuff.

Look at any lyrics that Fish wrote either for Marillion or in his Solo career. I know they are songs, but pretty powerful stuff.
