I was surprised to find that intonation, pitch, volume, pronunciation etc are considered to be non-verbal communication.

What , therefore, constitues 'verbal communication'?

Verbal communication is the actual words you are using but pitch and volume ect are how you are using the words not the words themselves which makes them non verbal.

Verbal is spoken communication. Non verbal is body language and intonation, attitude, etc.
