It sounds like this was a farrell cat. Anyone that has dealt with stray cats might be feeding a farrel cat, meaning a cat that is not socialized to accept human interaction. Kittens of farrell cats are taught by their mothers to avoid socializing with humans. It's extremely hard to tame or socialize a farrell adult cat. After years of working with them in a one on one situation trust is built, but the cat is never like a normal cat. Not sure if this would explain things but a lot of people land up with kittens from a friend that's feeding a family of strays in their back yard. These are not regular socialized cats. Additionally, cats that have been abused can be aggressive and bite and scratch and some cats are just off in their temperment.
