What I've seen of Williamsburg is nice but I've only done the touristy stuff. You could also try Amelia, VA which is close to Richmond but still somewhat in the country for your quiet nights

Williamsburg VA is very nice - you will like the activity of the colonial area, William & Mary College, and Busch Gardens. It is, however, quite expensive, so you might not be able to afford a place real close to the action.

attempt the east, East Anglia section and around there. Bedford is close to to London yet no longer a great city. the charges are going to be a great stumbling block although. you already know a %. of cigarettes expenses $11 and a gallon of gas is over $10 now. Why are you coming? i could stay there if I have been you, quite i could. u.s. is a lot nicer and the persons are nicer too.
