I have a letter from an international source. I am given the phone number of an individual I am to contact, but when I dial that number, I don't get through. The number looks like this: 011 34 616 389 000 (this is not the actual number, but it is in this format). I know the number is for a location in Spain. I've tried dialing a zero in front as well.

You need the international access number then the dialling code for spain. You start by dialling them, then you drop the first zero from the actual phone number and dial that.

Your number seems to include all this (including the dropped zero) but if it was sent to you from a US contact and you are not in US then its the international access code that is wrong.

Spains code is 34, and it looks like you are using 011 as the international access code - this, as far as I know, is for the USA, if you are in UK, NZ, Australia - 3 countries I have lived in and know - its 00.

So - if you are in the UK, using your sample number, you should dial: 00 34 616 389 000

This number looks ok. I would suggest that if there is a "0" after the 34 to omit the "0" and try the number again.

The "011" is the correct number to get you out of the US only. If you are calling from another country you would use another number. Hope this is helpful.

You either leave out the 34 or 616, not sure. Best call the operator and have he/she dial it for you. Don't forget the time difference!

The penguins are currently on vacation in Canada, I'll be answering for them. I've got a heart of ice anyway, so it seemed fitting.
