A gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb. (1 gal / 8.34 lb)*(0.5 lb) = 0.06 gal. A gallon is 8 pints, so (0.06 gal)*(8 pt/gal) = 0.48 pints, or nearly half a pint.

In the USA where I live the pint is 16 oz and weighs one pound. So 1/2 pint weighs 1/2 pound. But in Britain it is different. I believe the Imperial pint is 25% larger, or another way of saying it is a US pint is 4/5 of an Imperial pint.

Depends on the country you come from.
We used to chant "a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter"at school but this was before we went metric and did not have to worry about these problems. Our pints were Imperial which I think were different from USA pints.Using Imperial pints one pound would be 4/5 of a pint and 1/2 pound would be 2/5 pints.

Remember the old rhyme:

'A pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter'

So, a pint of water weighs 1 lb 4 oz or 20 oz since 16 oz = 1 lb.

Hence: 1/20 of a pint weighs 1 oz

Hence: 10/20 or 1/5 of a pint weighs 10 oz.

Since a pint is 16 ounces, a half-pint would be 8 ounces...thus a half pound. But technically this is not correct as it depends on the viscosity of the liquid, specific gravity. So you are doing volume or weight? They are not the same.

In Great Britain 1 pint = 1lb 4oz and is also 20 fluid ounces.
1/2 pound =8 ounces so 8 ounces = 8/20 = 0.4 pints.
In practise this would vary with temperature and US measures are different but in UK 1/2 lb is 8 fluid ounces.
1 gallon of water = 10lb.

Oh pet, I see you are a victim of our education system. The answer is, of course, 8 fluid ounces which is just under half a pint, a pint equating to 20 fluid ounces.

I'll just go and try it for you!

Well, that didn't work - I've not got a small enough jug. I reckon it would be 1/2 fl. oz, which is 1/40 of a pint or 15ml.
