it depends if you are mac or pc but if you are pc the simplist way to do this, in my opinion is to connect your device to the computer and bypass i tunes the default software, then go to my computer and select the device. now you are using the i pod like it was a file holder only. that is to say you will select the files you want and simply drag them either onto your desktop or into an empty folder after which i would use windows media player, drag the folder across into the playlist area and select the "burn to cd " option at the bottom of the screen.the media player will ask you if you want to convert them you say "yes" hey presto cd created.however if you dont know your way around windows media player it may take time in this instance i suggest that you use whatever you usually use to burn cds after you have extracted the desired file of your device. and if your a mac user, then i am not compatable!

If you are using iTunes in Windows this is a good solution. It's $20 but it does have a free trial for 14 days so you can check it out
http://www.copypod.net/
There are other solutions out there too, both for Mac and PC. Do a yahoo search and you can find them easily.
Also, if you want to avoid losing songs when you hook up your iPod to your computer, check iTunes settings and make sure you make manage songs manually selected. Otherwise iTunes will want to automatically sync up your music library and iPod library. Meaning if you delete a song on your computer, iTunes will delete it from your iPod too.

You can only do this if the Songs that originate on Your computers hard drive(Within iTunes) ONLY!
If you connect an iPod to a version of iTunes where some of the songs do not exists-It will erase them automatically from your iPod!
