My "Prize" is the satisfaction of helping someone with a real problem. The points just allow me to help more people.

They are just to encourage the answerers to answer more questions and hence make the Yahoo Answers community more popular. By accumulating points, you feel a sense of pride that you are among the top 1000 or top 500 answerers in the world's biggest Q&A community. As for prizes, Yahoo would be bankrupt if it did so. Its good enough to get your questions answered and help others for free!

Psychology experiments have proven repeatedly, that people do better if there is some sort of reward. Even if it is simply "points" that offer no material value.
People natrually strive for things, it's inherent. So, offering a chance to get the "best answer" and trying to get to "higher levels" means people will work harder at giving better answers.
And in the end, everyone benefits. (Except employers!)

They mean NOTHING... If they go to ZERO, then you cannot ask any questions. So to keep you honest, they give you 1 point for just signing on and 2 points for answering a question (and contributing to the "community").
BUT, the REAL point here is to get "Answers" to your questions.
I, for one, have received tons of info for Security (Virus/Spyware) protection in Computers/Internet...Security section. Many professional and knowledgeable people there on THAT issue......Even got a good "food preparation" in THAT category....
Good Luck!!!!!

I'm zero help here. I don't get it either. Why do they take away points when you ask a question? To stop those with stupid questions? I'll assume they're hoping for more answers than questions.

It's a mental prize.
Pinball machines have points, but you don't get anything from them either.
It's for fun and competition.
It keeps people coming back.

No you do not get a prize. One time I got a violation for answering a question because it was not an answer. I was like "It ends with a period, not a question mark!" Duh!
