Yep... sounds like a head gasket to me... plus whatever else happened in there just before the engine quit. Pull out your Visa, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

I agree with above. You most likely had a bad water pump that led to you blowing your headgasket.. That is an expensive thing to fix (headgasket) and unless you really love that car.. it's pretty much over.

Did it smell like Pancake Syrup when all this was going on?
Was the color of the smoke white?
Did you see your thermostat....climb to the max?
If you let your car cool off...would it start again?
After a while did anything you do get the car going again?

I bet your car just turns-over when you turn the key..but it sounds like it has the flu...right?

If the water pump is bad then driving the car without water in the radiator has probably busted the engine head which is a costly repair. Also your therostat may have been stuck and now it's a moot point because you have bigger problems if indeed the head is busted.

Its obvious that the guy that sold you that junk car new about the problem and wanted to dump it on someone else and make a little money. there is one born every min. so either pull out your wallet or get a second mortgage as you will need lots and lots of money!

What color was the smoke? Where was the smoke coming from? Engine compartment or tail pipe.
Could be head gasket if its white smoke from tailpipe.
Heavy clouds of blue /gray smoke fron tailpipe could be automatic transmission fluid.
Blue tailpipe smoke indicates internal engine problem, rings, seals, etc.
White smoke from under hood indicates overheating problem.

If it isn't any of the previous answers from previous posts, check your injectors. Older z's are notorious for that. Sounds like you cracked the block though.
