My son is 6 years oldand loves sports. He is particularily good at soccer. He is better thatn most kids his age. How can he become better when I live in a small town in wisconsin? He would like to learn some of those fancy moves, but I have no idea on how to teach him.

I LOVE it when kids play soccer. I'm 40 now, but when I was a kid, I played for 12 years. I was never really good at it, but I enjoyed it and it really kept me healthy.
I would look in your area for a local YMCA soccer club. Failing that, go to a local family-owned sports shop. Those places usually have a bulletin board with information on them for sporting clubs for kids. If there are any soccer fields in your area, drive by them on a Saturday and see if a game is happening. If so, ask some of the parents.

The best thing you can do is encourage him! It will establish good health, teamwork and social interaction in him at an early age. PLUS he'll work off all his energy on the field instead of inside the house!

I assume that your son is already in your local soccer league. If not, get him signed up. If he is and you are wanting more activity then check in nearby towns to see if they have a competitive league. If you don't have an experienced soccer coach in town then get to a large book store or go to Amazon.com to look for books and videos that might help. There are tons of them out there.

Our local library has a series of tapes showing soccer techniques being demonstrated by English players. You might see if your library has something similar.

Two books that might help are: Soccer-Steps to Success by Joseph A. Luxbacher and published by Leisure Press and Soccer Fundamentals for Players and Coaches by Wiel Coerver published by Prentice Hall.

I think soccer is a terrific sport for a kid of any age or ability level. My son played in our city league from age six until age 14 and then in high school. Just be careful not to push too much too soon - soccer is a very physically demanding sport - let him develop and grow into it.

Hope this helps. Best wishes to you and your son.
