It sounds like the microwave is blowing up! And no, I am not microwaving foil or anything like that. These are individual soup servings in cups meant for microwaving.

It's called a defective microwave. The booming sound is actually your microwave leaking out micro-waves to the outside world.

Because microwaves heat food from the inside out. The heat from the inside of the bowl of soup causes the food to rise upward....

If you're talking about those Campbell's soup things with the plastic lid, I think the noise is pressure release from under the lid. However, I've been wrong before and wouldn't be surprised if I was now.
