Hubby has a vasectomy scheduled in a few weeks. What should he and I both expect? What preparations are expected? What is the recovery period, etc?

My husband just had one a couple of months ago. Not much pain was involved. He was on bed rest the first 24 hours with a bag of frozen peas between his legs. Also, no heavy lifting for like two weeks. We were able to have sex again in a weeks time.

He should have a snug fitting athletic supporter(jock strap) to wear for the first week or so afterwards. Sometimes the doctor/hospital provides one, sometime the patient is asked to- so you need to ask about that beforehand. The guy can't drive home afterwards, nor for a few days afterwards, although they generally don't really want to, so it's not a big problem. He will want to have nice loose clothing to wear for a few days, shorts or sweat pants work well. Ice packs are comfy the first day or so, but frozen peas work better than ice packs. You can decide if you want to eat them afterwards or not yourself. If your bedroom is upstairs, plan on sleeping on the couch for a few days, or in an easy chair. Stairs are not pleasant options for 3-4 days at the soonest. Eat easy to digest food for a few days, the last thing you want to get is constipated. Don't do anything the least bit enticing for him either, and be really careful first thing in the mornings- if you get my drift here. Stick to the ugly nighties for a few days, until he is up on his feet again. Recovery as far as pain takes 3-4 days, full recovery may take a week or two. During that time, even after the incision heals, go real easy on any kind of athletic activity, including the fun kinds. Ask the doctor about bathing vs showers, as sometime a sit in a warm bath is soothing when the stitches itch. Heat packs feel good after a day or so, and they help heal things up. Vitamin E on the incision will also assist with skin healing. If you have to have a full shave job, it will itch like all get out about three days after the surgery. There's no point saying don't scratch, cause he will anyway- just avoid the stitches and try to do it with very clean hands. Or use a soft bath scrubbie very gently, to help release the hair ends. Above all else, try to maintain a sense of humor about it all. And remember to use a backup birth control until the count comes back zero. Vasectomys interrupt the supply lines, they don't empty the warehouse. I've know a few cases of SURPRISE when folks didn't wait or forgot that small detail. With patience and humor, he and you should be back to normal within a week.

He shouldn't need to do anything - although the clinic/doctor may ask him to shave his pubic hair (usually, they'll do that just before the operation).

It's a simple procedure - he won't need a general anesthetic, just a local. A small snip in the scrotum, then the doctor will ligate the tubes and put a stitch in the wound. He'll be sore for a few days, maybe a week. It doesn't normally affect daily life, but he'll probably want to take a day or two off work and rest. Follow the doctor's directions about lifting and exercise.

You can have sex as soon as your husband wants to, but remember to use precautions. It takes a while for all the sperm to pass out of the man's body; and sometimes the operation fails. Your husband should return to the clinic for a sperm count after a month. If that is clear, then you no longer need to use protection when having sex.

I expect that when you gave birth you were less of a baby then he will be after this procedure.;) But seriously. Before this he will probably have to shave the area where they will do procedure. He may also be given some Valium before he goes in, to relax him.(Because in most cases it's done under local anesthesia...needle in scrotum!) My husbands went off without a hitch. Until after, when he was still numb and thought he was great and over-exerted himself and was in alot of pain. But with rest and pain meds., recovery was about 5days.

it is just a plain office procedure and he should be out in no time. However, you still have to refrain from engaging in sexual intercourse for a week cause there might be remnants in the tubules for sometime. but i'd lake to make it a point that vasectomy is not 100% contraception there are cases when leaks do occur in like 1 out of a million perhaps which could cause pregnancy.

Ask your doctor about preperation it depends on the procedure. Recovery varies: If its done with laser it could be about a week, Standard takes longer and there is a risk of infection. No nooky for a while and he has to have his sperm count checked a couple times after that.
