Lifted the hearth rug and it is pristine underneath but the rest of the carpet looks stained from coal dust and general dirt (I DO hoover regularly). What would be the best way to clean it. Made from synthetic fibre.

Has anyone ever used a Rainbow cleaner and if so do you think it would do the trick for me?

Steam clean.

If that doesn't work, it's time to change carpets. I suggest you check the wood beneath, to see if it's worth sanding and varnishing. Invest in some good quality dark tone Persian or Oriental rugs. They can be taken with you if you ever sell the house, or move to another place.

Hire a Carpet Shampooer, Steam Clean. Or look in local paper to find someone to come in to do it for you. Its cheap, quick and you don't have to do a thing, other than call them.

I suggest you invest in one of those home steam cleaners. They work pretty well if you are diligent about using them, although they don't always do as well with the stains. Good luck.

something to think about, replace your carpets with wood, it looks better, its easier to keep clean, also it helps if you suffer with asthma or allergic to dust mites as these mites love carpets.
