Buses are a beautiful way to get around the city if you sit upstairs and ideally at the front. My favourite bus ride is the number 15. It's a great journey from the centre of town through the city, past Saint Paul's and various other nice bits of London. Tubes are hot and sweaty and unpleasant. The DLR is nice but restictive in terms of where you can go. There is also much to be said for taking in London by foot as Charles Dickens used to do.

A combination of all modes possible to obtain the quickest route (leaving out the car). Going by bike for distances less than 3 miles is usually the quickest (even faster than a car usually) but it is tiring. A car is not nice to drive in London because it is stressful not all that much faster than the bus and requires parking. so if you want to travel safely with the least hassle without getting tired, go by tube and bus. The tube is not always the fastest for all routes. So situationally plan your route before you go to asses the best combination of modes of transport. Alternatively to go from east to west or vice versa take a boat down the thames, or a barge across the regents canal. Its a very nice experiance, but its a little more expensive.

My legs are probably the more reliable form of transport for London. They are often on time and dont stop when a signal doesn't work.

I always use my legs if I can.
Tubes can be good if you are in a rush as they are really frequent or an alternative would be the bus which takes a bit longer but you don't have all the hustle and bustle of the tubes. The bus is also a lot cheaper.

The busses. I love looking at people and what they do. Some Saturdays my friend and I just get on busses, not knowing their routes, and go through all of London. Shopping, seeing new places (get lost sometimes).......... but if I'm in a hurry, a cab(not in peak hours) or tube.

Helicopter has to be favourite.......{Had to do it once - thank gods that I didnt have to pay!!}

Best (and *quite* affordable as long as its not on a regular basis) is taxi.

Tube is most cost effective, but I'd be hard stretched to call it 'favourite' for any reason

in the front seat of the upper deck of a double decker bus

Failing having a bicycle available -
BUS IS BEST!
2nd choice - underground - but can't enjoy the view as you can on the bus.
