The horizontal distance between the trees is 40 yards, and the taller tree has grown 36 - 27 = 9 feet taller than the other. You just need to use the Pythagorean theorem, a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where a and b are your known legs of the right triangle, 40 and 9, and c is the unknown hypotenuse. Just take the square root of the sum of the squares.

The difference in the height of the trees is 36-27=9 yards(you should have gone metric by now).This the upright in a right angled triangle .
The distance apart is 40 metres. This the base of a right angled triangle
The hypotenuse is the distance apart of the tops of the trees.
hypotenuse =SQRT(9^2+40^2) =41

difference in heights=36-27=9 yards
distance between the trunks=40 yards
using a^2+b^2=c^2
c^2=40^2+9^2=1681
so c= rt1681=41
the tops are 41 yards apart

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

where c is the distance between the tops
a is 40 yards
b (the difference in heights) is 36-27 = 9 yards

c^2 = 40^2 + 9^2 = 1600 + 81 = 1681

take the square root of 1681, and you get c = 41 yards

Drawn out, this problem involves a right triangle with one side of 40 yards (the horizontal distance between the trunks), and another side of 9 yards (the vertical distance between the height of the trunks).

If you've memorized all the pythagorean triples, you'd already know that the answer is one less than the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I'd have a solid wood fence with pots of herbs up the side. There are some fantastic photos on facebook. I'd have an herb garden for sure even if it was just a small space or in pots. Basil is fantastic. If you have somewhere to hang something you can get a log and paint if if you want and hang jars from it with pretty chain or wire at various lengths and put flowers in them. A swing is nice to sit in when the weather is decent. Bird bath with some rocks, like a rock garden. If you really want fancy a gazebo is great!

a^2+b^2 = c^2
a = 40
b = 36 - 7 = 9
40 X 40 = 1600
9 X 9 = 81
1600 + 81 = 1681
???

a=40
b=36-27=9
c=???
