We are having a house built in northern Alabama and the perc test came back as requiring an engineered system with over 600 ft of field lines. I'm not sure if the price increase the builder is asking is reasonable over a conventional system as priced with the home.

YES and NO. You can't purchase a traditional (perf pipe and stone) drain field on line. There are some newer "Stoneless Systems" ie chamber systems , Elgin, EZ Flow....etc., that can be bought on line but you would be better finding a local distributor. the drain field must be installed in the proper soils and sized right to make sure you get the performance you need.
