Captions from both teams will meet with the refs and discuss what the refs think is important. I'm a caption and it's dumb. All they tell you is to make sure everyones shirts are tucked in and to not wear any jewlery or bands around the wrist. Then you get 20 minutes to warm up. Usually you do lay-ups and then shoot around. Then 5 players from each team will enter the court. At the start of the game there will be a tip off ( two people will jump up and tip the ball back to their team mates). Then you will either as a Freshman play four 6 minute quarters and as a Sophomore/ Varsity play 4 8 minute quarters. After two quarters you will go into Half Time. There the players will leave and go into a locker room and discuss what they need to work on. While the players are in there usually the cheerleaders come out and perform or the crowd will take a bathroom break and ge ta snack at the concession stand. Then the players will return usually with 2-3 minutes left and they can either shoot around or get a drink and rest. Then the 3rd quarter will start.
The object is to stick the ball into your opponents net. You can either do it with two hands or with one. You may either pass the ball or dribble it. It is not allowed to run with the ball, that is called a TRAVEL. If a person is hit on the arm or smacked while in the motion of shooting or laying the ball up the ref will call a foul. The person who was shooting will be allowed two shots , if he made the basket when it was called its called AND ONE and hes given one shot. To make a three point play. The person who commited the foul is only allowed to get 5 fouls before he is out of the game. A person who is dribble the ball and carrys it over will be called for a CARRY. When the defensive person has his feet set and is in position and the offenseive player runs into him that is called an CHARGE. There are two types of charges but you wont have to worry about that. There are two point shots and there are there point shots. If you shoot from beyond the three point line and make it, you will be given three points, anything in front of that you will only get two. If someone steps out of bounds with the ball , it will be given to the opposite team. If the ball is batted out of bounds the ref will decide who hit it out and give it to the other team. The player who is throwing the ball in is only allowed 5 seconds. IF he uses it all up the ref will blow his whistle and call 5 SECONDS. When your playing on offense you are only allowed to be in the lane for 3 seconds. If you go past that limit the ref will call you for 3 SECONDS IN THE LANE. When a person batts the bal out of a persons hands , it is called a steal. They can go for a fast break, which is when you and maybe someone else are ahead of the opponent and dribbling down the court. But ifyou were to hit the person while batting down on it, the ref will call you for REACHING IN. That you will also be given a foul for and it will go against the 5 you can get. If you are fouled while taking a three pointer you are granted 3 free throws. When your at the free throw line you have 15 seconds to shoot the ball. If your foot crosses the line the basketball will not count . If a person leaves the line too early, to get the rebound if missed, will get a LANE VIOLATION, and if its the oposite team thats shooting , the shooter will get to redo the shot. If its the same team thats at the line, he wont get to redo it and he'll shoot his next shot if he has one. When a basket is good , the person who is taking the ball out of bounds is allowed to run the baseline. If the opposite is putting a Full Cout Pressure on them , it means that their matching up man to man and trying to stop the ball from getting in bounds. Half Court Pressure is the same but its at half court. There are two types of Defenses. Man-Man and A Zone. Man to man is harder to guard but its more effective. And Zone allows more energy to be used and less work, but once again its not as effective. When a person takes the ball or swats it away from the rim it is called Goaltending. If the shooter was shooting a three they will get the automatic three points. If it was a two they will get the two points. The game willl be determined by who has the most points. If its tied, then the game will go into over time. If its still the same it will go into double overtime. If its still the same then it will go into sudden death. And the first team to make a basket wins.

Well, it's supposed to be 2 (sometimes 2 1/2 or 3) Some players are just really good at shuffling their feet so it doesn't look like they are traveling, and other just get star treatment

There is not enough time in the day to explain everything in a single answer. Read a book or a website on the subject.

Well all I know is - a player gets a ball, bounces it on the court and dribbles to the net, then throws the ball into the air hoping to put it into a basket.
