All charities are self serving, looking after their own interests. Have you any idea how much the staff are paid, it's very rewarding as money is poured into their coffers.
Notice that in the UK it's always a lord or lady in charge on about £150,000 a year, that says it all.
Only about 6 to 8 pence in the pound goes to the actual cause.

Depends on the charity and the kind of help you need.

I've had help from advice lines before, without ever having given them a penny, but felt I ought to help them once they had helped me...

Remember they are charities, and they do rely on donations rather than the corporate financial ethos, so they may not always have sufficient funds to help everyone.

I'm guessing you've had a bad experience; don't let it cloud your judgement. There are a lot of good people out there, give them time to help you...

I think they wait for official direction as to who to help, such as the government pointing them to help multiple victims of a large high profile problem, like a fire or flood. This gets the exposure on the television, which is said to generate more contributions. They are not pitched toward helping the one person who says "I have been out of work for a year and I am through my savings and am going to have to hit the street; can you help me?" That's a pity, too.

I wish you best of luck.

Many people will donate a hospital ward or an ambulance or money for equipment or anything else that their name can be written on , ( Donated by...................). Very few will offer to pay for maintenance of equipment , hospital staff wages , education for needy kids , hot meals for poor families , or rehabilitation programs. They can't put their name on these.
Try this test:
When they come around asking for donations for " A GOOD CAUSE ", tell them that you are prepared to donate time but not money. If they refuse, you will know who you are dealing with.

probably because there is so many people that ask for help they may be overwhelmed, and cant get to every one. The same happens here in the U.S.
