Well a lot of answers are correct in that you have to close all applications that are running,I find that the FIREWALL is my culprit so Off Line close Firewall, Virus Checker and anything else that keeps checking ,then you should find Defrag works OK,,,,Cheers
Ps...JUST Remember it can take hours so leave it run while you sleep.

Usually if the defrag stops, you have something running in the background that is stopping it (or actually restarting it)
Disconnect any Network or Internet cables
Stop your virus scanner
Stop your screen saver
Reboot the PC in Safe Mode (Turn on the PC and repeatedly press the F8 key until you get the Safe Mode option screen)
This will prevent any unneed services or programs from loading in the background
Run the defrag
When finished, reboot the PC to return to Normal Mode

Are you absolutely sure that the application froze? Sometimes these defraggers get stuck on a percentage number for a long time, but the defragger is still working.
Other than that, close your system tray (the icons in the bottom-right corner) and press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up the Task Manager and close some background running tasks. Also, make sure that you have enough hard drive space before defragging. Defraggers require a certain amount of free hard drive space. Usually a defragger program will specify the amount of hard drive space required as a percentage.

Be Patient! The defrag process takes some time. It could actually stay on 10% for hours. Walk away from the computer or else you drive yourself nuts. As long as your harddrive light is blinking and you hear activity clicking coming from the machine, it is defragmenting. Let it run its course.

boot the computer into safe mode ... do this by pressing F8 after the first black post screen loads and just before windows starts to load ... then let the defrag happen overnight ... windows 98 can take a long tome to get past that crucial 10% mark

you have something running in the background that's interfering. click on start the run then type in msconfig. click on the startup tab and get rid of stuff you don't need. reboot then run defrag.
Or shut your computer down hit the F8 key while it is booting up so a menu comes up, choose run in safe mode. then defrag, reboot normally again.

Does it _really_ stop, or are you just being impatient? Leave it to run overnight - if it is still stopped at 10% in the morning then you have cause for concern.
Defragging is slow - if you haven't got the time or patience, then don't do it until bed time!

You must kill all running programs, especially screen savers, energy savers, virus software and other things like that running in the background.
