some security features are better than others..which ones do you have? do they usually find something or are they usually clean. What browser do you use? if you use internet explorer, it is prone to being hacked or infections. Try a different browser first of all.
Your pc freezing might be an indication of a hardware problem. Is your hard drive almost full? if it is, you should uninstall some unneeded software progs.

Are you using Internet Explorer? If yes, then use Mozilla Firefox. Your IE could be hijacked. Now..just to make sure get the following programs, I can assure you these are all safe:
AVG Anti Virus
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot Search and Destroy
all obtainable from www.download.com, for free, no trials.
These are my 3 "must-haves" Scan your computer and if no virus/infection, it's IE (hijacked).

yes it could still be infected. I had a virus that got through 2 virus protection programs. It told me that i had to restart in safe mode to remove the infection. Puter would not let me restart in safe mode. Had to take it to a professonal to get it removed.

this is to do with your computer, it might be trying to work to hard, if you have to much on your computer, try clearing of unneeded files, also try defrag, disk clean up. other than that, try downloading updates for Xp, and IE, or try using Mozilla firefox, or Opera Browser (both linked below)
