With the late Pope JPII, it was BV Mary who was his strong and steadfast support, and great pillar of his strength. JPII's motto was "Totally Yours" which was a reference to his devotion to BV Mary.
With Pope B16, I am not sure if he is as Marian in his spirituality, but not doubt she supports him as she has done for all members of her Son's Church down through the centuries.

More than likely, he had a very supportive mother behind him on his rise through the ranks.. and possibly, he has a supportive family, including a few sisters, now... just a thought.
