It is quite RUDE to ask for things for your baby shower. If your friends who will be attending ASK you what you need then you can tell them but this isn't like filling out a Christmas list for Santa. The one hosting the party should at least get your input as to what you will need so that she can pass that along in the invitations but asking for things is just simply considered rude.

I have a 3 month old son and I remember my baby shower very well. I asked for bath stuff, diapers, wipes, gift cards to buy the formula, and such. You are not taking the fun out of it, because these are things that you need. My son recived so many clothes, most of them he will never where and I did not get gift reciepts, so I could not return them. Diapers, all sizes, wipes and the refill packs, soap, shampoo, if you know what formula you are using (the hospital might let you know what they recommend).
-A product called Buttpaste works really well. It is a cream for the diaper area. It has zinc and is a thick paste, you only need a little and the tube goes a long way.
-If you are using formula, Enfamil is really good. If you sign up on there website you get coupons, plus free formula by mail.
Please note, these are just my recommendations, I don not know about other formulas and what they provide to users.

There is nothing wrong with asking for the items you still really need, but be prepared to receive more clothes than you can ever possibly dress your baby in. Everybody loves buying baby clothes because they are so cute. You may end up with a lot of stuffed animals too that you don't have anywhere to put. Don't forget to ask for things like Infants Tylenol, Mylicon, Thermometer, Probe Covers for the Thermometer, Lubricant for Thermometer, Nail Clippers or Scisors, etc.
Good luck, hope you get everything that you really need.

Not at all. Usually I try to buy expectant mothers a pack of diapers and then something fun to pick out. You can just put them on your registries if that's all you really need.
If whoever is throwing you the shower isn't on a really tight budget, you can make a game of it. Pick a nice gift basket as a prize, and on the invitation tell your guests that for each pack of diapers or wipes she brings she will receive an entry to win the basket. That way whoever wants to participate can.

You can make the suggestion... But don't require them to buy just that. You might find some go with a gift and diapers or wipes. Or maybe a small gift with a certificate. Don't limit them as to what they can get. We use baby things up quick. You could suggest things like clothing in larger sizes, onesies, socks, small toys. ect.
Good Luck

Guests are not required to give gifts, but they usually do. On the invitations, say something like: If you'd like to buy gifts for expectant mother, these are the sorts of things she needs. Experienced mothers will understand and most people will give what you ask for in addition to all the cutesy stuff. FYI, you can never have too many baby clothes, blankets, etc.

Make a suggestion that the shower be a diapering party and request gifts for that purpose. Wouldn't take the fun out. Some will still bring the nick-nacky kinds.

I don't think there's any harm in that. The baby shower is to buy things that you need anyway. Sometimes I personally have a hard time picking things out for others so i would like it if someone told me what to buy.

No it dosent ruin the fun. This is the most practical if you ask me. Like baby laundry detergent and things. If it is what you need then that is what you should ask for. Not everyone will shop off of a registry, but they will follow it somewhat.

You can maybe add other necessities like extra sheets. We really loved those crib sized quilts...seemed like we used a lot of them. We went thru tons of burp cloths, and we used cloth diapers for that. Teether toys...you'll need them sooner than you realize. Board books...you'll need them also sooner than you realize. Just a few ideas to add some variety to the basic necessities.
