Senna.... many many reasons, Fangio was the first of the "best" drivers, Prost was great as well, Mansell a true british Bulldog, Stewart a pure driver, MS....sorry he will be known as the one who got the records only due to the fact we lost a legend in Senna. People who saw Senna in action will know he was truely gifted.
1 thing stands out in my mind I found an old video the other day of Senna stopping his car during a race to help a fellow driver get out of his car as it was burning, MS never even stopped to see if his own flesh and blood was safe after passing him how many times after his crash in the USA GP?
So I would say Senna was the greatest, his attitude his brain , his motivation, his love of the sport will probably never been seen again, sorry MS fans but he was just a greedy spoilt person driven by self promotion...thats not a true champ.

I am afraid no one can say who is the greatest driver, all of the ones who would be considered were the greatest in their own era but there is no real way of knowing who would come out on top if they were to hypothetically race tomorrow. It also depends on how you define greatest; Senna seems to have had the most raw talent yet Schumacher is statistically the best in just about every possible category. It is an interesting topic for discussion, and I would have to say Schumacher as he has been the dominant one for most of the time I ave been following it (1992 onwards). However, had Senna not been killed whilst in his prime, Schumacher may never have had the chance to dominate the sport. So to answer your question, Schumacher by a side pod!

Simple really. Michael Schumacher. And not just because he holds all the records either..
I have been watching F1 since I was about 4 (am now 29) and have seen all the greats including Piquet, Rosberg, Senna, Prost, Mansell etc. Schumacher was better than all of them; his dedication to his craft is second to none and his driving ability is beyond reproach. He won many of his Championships in cars that were far from the best in the field (ie. the Benetton years) and has allways made even a poor car reasonably competitive. He went to Ferrari when they were in complete disarray and was instrumental in changing them into a multiple Championship team. He can also lay claim to some of the greatest wins ever, such as in torrential rain in Spain 96 when his Ferrari was one of the worst cars on the grid but the conditions seperated the men from the boys; and Belgium 95 when he started 16th on the grid but was leading by lap 15.
Some criticise him for cheating and race tactics but Senna (in particular) and Prost were guilty of just as bad if not worse. Others say that his team mates help him too much but in the 50's, Fangio won one of his championships when his team mate gave him his car half way through a race! Remember, you don't get a whole team working around you becuase your a nice guy - you do that by being the best and getting the job done.

I like Ayrton Senna. He wasn't exactly Mr Personality, but he was pretty awesome behind the wheel. Schumacher and Alain Prost are up there also, with a mention to Jackie Stewart. Can we clone these guys and put them all on the race track at the same time?

1. Juan Fangio. A genius in an era when drivers risked their lives everyday.
2. Jackie Stewart. Brilliant even in uncompetitive cars.
3. Ayton Senna. He was great when he died, and would have become even greater.
4. Micheal Schumacher. Relentlessly competitive, and head and shoulders above any other current driver.
5. Nikki Lauder. Brilliant, almost burnt to death and came back again to keep winning. Really brave.

I think alot of people forget how abolutely amazing Senna was as its so long since he sadly died...I am a huge fan of his and think he would have won an unbelievable amount of titles, but taking all that into account, I still think Schumacher is the best ever...he has (or should that be had) it all..and despite some dubious clashes with other drivers his all round ability can't be questioned. Thought Villeneuve was pure class aswell...

Ayrton Senna - no-one drove in wet conditions better than him, and unlike Schumacher he didn't feel the need to cheat repeatedly.

I really feel cheated, we will never get to see the greatest racing of all time between the two greats,
Ayton Senna and Micheal Schumacher.
Wouldn't that have been something, I guess we will never know :(

Jacques Villeneuve. Became World Champion in his first season ever. Would have won 2 in a row hadn't it been for being deliberately pushed off the road. Subsquently, always looked for new challenges rather than stay in the best car and just rely on marshalls bias to win races
