Those particular double meanings have been around a long time. Syd James used it in the Carry on Films. So, it was probably around before that. Why do you think that it is derogatory? As most people liked crumpets, I think it was meant as a compliment. I am not in favour of gratuitous changes in the meaning of words. I took particular exception to the hi-jacking of the word GAY to now mean, in modern parlance, a male homosexual. In now means that we have been robbed of the word as it was originally used.
I also think that the dictionary has been subjected to a dumbing down in recent years. We have such words as 'White van man' and 'Delia'. If these definitions should appear anywhere, it should be in an encyclopaedia and not a dictionery.

Crumpet {derogatory} is a corruption of strumpet, which usage is at least as old as shakespearian times.

Crumpets are delicious.
Crumpet is a term used to describe sex (not just a term of endearment for a woman).
The same could be said of Oats -
"I'm having oats for breakfast" or "I got my oats last night"
