Who says Dr Who has to be English or does he want to avoid being compared to Sylvester McCoy or what?

It's got a bit to do with that the Doctor Before him - that'd be Christopher Eccelston - used a regional accent so they decided against Tennant doing it. Originally there was a through away line in the christms Invasion that said something to the effect that Roses accent had rubbed off on him!

Just as an extra peice of added information - he's the only Doctor that hasn't used his real accent.

I don't think it'ss got anything to do with people understanding him. After all In the episode 'Tooth And Claw' (the one with the werewolf...) he spent the majority of the episode with a scottish accent. I think it's more to do with the character of The Doctor. The scottish accent wouldn't have fitted with the persona that both Russel T Davies and David Tennant have created.

Because Dr Who is English?

Doctor Who has always been played with an English Accent.

Aparently he is actually supposed to be half human and half Galifranian.

Recent reports coming through is that we might be seeing Doctor Who's son in the third season.

This has been hinted in previous series (before the new ones came along)

Who knows? Hugh Laurie in House plays an American Doctor. Why can't he keep his original accent? But as already mentioned, it is probably so that everyone can understand him; the BBC broadcasts all over the world!

Christopher Eccleston was a northern doctor. I think they wanted someone with a more southern accent. At least by having a Scottish actor, they weren't being prejudiced when it came to auditioning and choosing the doctor!

I'm Scottish, and when i act people say that i should use a different accent - also the BBC probably don't want lots of people with different accents playing parts - it may get confusing?!?

Apparantly it's his way of acting, he likes to put on an english accent when acting although i think the actual reason is that lots of people complained that they couldn't understand his scottish accent without the subtitles so the bbc made him

Well I certainly think he's the worst doctor so far- he completely over-acts! But I don't see why he can't just have his own accent. after all, if the doctor can change identity, why not his accent? I think the next Doctor should be black, preferably Colin Salmon. I would definitely watch it then! Can't wait for torchwood on Sunday ITV3 with John Barrowman-he's gorgeous!
