I have a set of Foreign Language learning cassettes and books that someone gave to me. To re-buy in cd format will cost me a few hundred bucks I don't want to spend. I'd like to record these into my computer then download them onto cd or my ipod. Help, please?!?!?!?!

To make CDs from audio cassettes you need a shielded (audio) cable with two (male) jacks at both ends. This filters cut out the machine noise. Connect one jack to the phone slot of the cassette player and the other to the "Line In" slot of the sound card on your computer.

You can use any populer program like SoundBlaster's Awe64 with or without the SB sound card installed on the mainboard to make audio recordings because SB's drivers are compatible with most of the sound chips.

If your speakers are connected to the computer on Line Out on the sound card., you will be able to hear the cassette as soon as you press the play button on your cassette.

After that, you can adjust the volume of the cassette player before you clicking the red record button icon on the computer software and you are on your way to transferring the cassette audio sound on to you computer.

Keep mind that wave files need large disk space, between 25 to 60 MB. If you are using an older version of Windows like 98SE, which runs on maximum 128 MB RAM, and reads maximum 20 MB hard disks, you will end up keep cleaning up "temp" wave file to clear the disk space.

With Windows XP2, you will have no such annoying problems because XP2 runs both on older main boards using 256 MB SD RAM or latest mainbords with faster DDR RAM. Try to use a computer with 256 or 512 DDR RAM to avoid all the annoying problems of the computer hardware limitations.

The final step it to burn an audio CD on a CDRW drive using Nero Burning or Adaptec program which came with your CDRW drive.

Keep in mind that you cannot use Adaptec if the CDRW drive works only with Nero because your computer will only recognise the original software that came with the CDRW drive.

There is no way unless you have a computer that can support cassettes player connection. You also need the software to do the recording. After all these hassled you need to learn how to use the software.

If you feel that you want to minimize the trouble, you can get a cassette to CD recorder. You can do it yourself which is your asset. Otherwise, you check any place can do the covert for you. In Singapore, we have a lot of places doing it. Cassette to CD is S$8 per disc.

to record a cassette tape and computer,

get a AV to 3mm Jack, and plug that into your computers microphone / line in plug in the back of your computer,

download Line-in recording software (for example the one linked below)

and using this software you should be able to save them to your computer into different file types, but for your iPod, MP3 would be your best bet... :)
