Biologically it's an organ. It's what keeps you alive by pumping blood into your body.

It is often associated with feelings and emotion, namely love.

Examples
Heartily - enthusiastically
Heart-throb - in reference to someone you like
Heart-broken - to feel pain, sorrow, grief by losing/falling out of/being separated from love

If the heart is what keeps our bodies alive the love is what keeps our souls alive by pumping care, affection and action into our veins.
