i am thinking of adding a 320 gig internal drive to my desktop computer.

once installed, is it then easy to remove the harddrive without damaging it?

I ask this because i may be moving overseas, and do not want to take the entire computer with me - just the hard drive. I do not really want to buy an external drive, as i believe they are slower, and more expensive.

Just remove the power cable and data ribbon cable and 2-4 screws. Some computers have the drives on slide-in rails for easy removal so you don't even have to use a screwdriver.

First, back up any important data, in case the drive gets damaged, stolen or lost during your move...

Open the case
Unplug the two cables that connect to the back of the hard drive
Remove any screws holding it into the bay
(Some PCs require you to squeeze or otherwise release the rails the hard drive is on to get it out rather than remove screws)
Slide the hard drive out

If you are taking the drive with you, you will want to pack it securely with lots of bubble wrap (no "peanuts" as they cause static electricity) in a thick box. But it should survive the trip.

Yes you can damage it if you are not grounded but other then that don't drop it and you should be good. Touch some unpainted metal to ground yourself out before you touch any comptuer part.

Make sure the power cord is unplug cause in all atx systems there is still power being supplied even when it is turned off. You might want to keep magnetic screwdrivers away from the new and old harddrive seeing how they can interfere with harddrive.

For traveling I would buy one of those anti static bags to stick it in and then wrap it in bubble wrap.

it's easy i've done it million of times...all you do is take out the cover and unscrew the bolts on both sides of the hard drive then pull the two cables out..thenjust slide the hard drive out

No it's easy to do. Just make sure the power is off before you open up the box.
